Carnelian Properties & Meaning

Carnelian is a phenomenal red Quartz with much history and allure! Like all Quartz, this variety has a Mohs hardness of around 6-7, so it’s scratch resistant and can be worn in many ways as jewelry (e.g., bracelets, rings, and pendants). The name “Carnelian” comes from the Latin word “Carneus,” meaning “flesh,” in reference to its resemblance to flesh in both color and texture. In fact, many ancient civilizations have highly prized this magnificent red and orange crystal from the Chalcedony family. For instance, during the Roman Empire, high-ranking soldiers were given this gem as a medal, which was often engraved and attached to their battle helmets. They believed this crystal provided them with courage, confidence, and protection in the battlefield. At that time, Carnelian was expensive and reserved exclusively for the elite. Furthermore, the Ancient Greeks believed that Carnelian could enhance their physical performance and vitality. This is why they often carried this gem while engaging in competitive sports.
